WYSO Concerto
Competition
The WYSO Concerto Competition was established to feature the talents of individual
Youth Orchestra and Philharmonia members. Participants prepare solo works
that may be performed with their respective orchestra. A $20
audition fee is required. Members who have won the competition with a specific
WYSO orchestra may not compete in future years with that same orchestra. Previous
Philharmonia winners may compete again if/when they become members of the
Youth Orchestra.
Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition 2007-2008:
Congratulations to all who participated; the talent was outstanding. The judges had a very difficult time making their decision.

Philharmonia Orchestra Concerto Competition 2007-2008:

Tony Oliva, a 16-year old violinist who attends James Madison Memorial High School, is the winner of the 2008 Philharmonia Orchestra Concerto Competition. Tony has been invited to perform Concerto No. 1 in A minor by Jean Batiste Accolay accompanied by the Philharmonia Orchestra at the Bolz Family Spring Concert on Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 4:00 p.m.
Murphy
Family Interlochen Scholarship Audition
The Murphy Family Interlochen Scholarship Auditions are open to Youth Orchestra
members wishing to attend the Interlochen Music Camp. The family of Stephen Murphy has endowed this scholarship for over ten years providing an opportunity for many Youth Orchestra members to attend the camp on reduced tuition. Upon acceptance to the
camp, the winner will receive a $1000 scholarship and a WYSO letter of recommendation
to be used in the application for further scholarship support from Interlochen.
Previous winners and graduating seniors are ineligible for the competition.
Maggie Schenk, a 14-year-old home schooled flutist in Youth Orchestra, has been named the winner of the 2008 Murphy Family Interlochen Arts Camp Scholarship. Upon acceptance to the camp, Maggie will receive $1,000 toward her camp tuition.
Buchhauser Honors Orchestra Scholarship Competition
The Thomas Buchhauser Honors Orchestra Scholarship Competition is open to WYSO members who successfully audition into the WSMA State Honors Orchestra and are committed to playing in WYSO during the following season. The winner will receive a $250 scholarship to attend the Honors Orchestra summer camp. A panel of judges will choose the scholarship recipient based on merit demonstrated during the audition. Results will be mailed the week following the audition.

• An accompanist is not required but is recommended
