WYSO SCHOOL MUSIC PARTICIPATION POLICY
As a WYSO member, you are expected, and strongly encouraged, to participate in your school orchestra, band, or strings program. Only occasionally do WYSO members opt not to participate in their school music program. In such cases, members are asked to notify the WYSO Executive Director, in writing, of their plans. Involvement in your school orchestra or band, the training and experience you gain there, and the support you receive from your music director will make you a stronger leader in WYSO. In turn, your school music program will benefit from the technical, musical, and leadership skills you develop as a WYSO member.
School music ensembles provide daily playing and technique/musicianship
building, experience
playing a wider variety of literature, the chance to learn from different
music directors, additional opportunities (all-state groups, solo/ensemble
festivals, tours, competitions, musicals, community events), opportunities
for leadership, and the opportunity to serve as a role model.
Participation in scheduled activities of your school orchestra
or band always take precedence
over WYSO. Absences due to school orchestra or band conflicts will not jeopardize
your WYSO membership. However, multiple absences may cause the conductor to
decide that you will not play in the concert. Carefully plan ahead so that
both your school and WYSO commitments can be fulfilled.
