WELCOME BACK TO WYSO!
From Music Director, James Smith:
I hope everyone had a wonderful summer filled with special adventures, music camps, and lots of time to relax and have fun.  I enjoyed my summer vacation very much, but I am looking forward to the first rehearsal where I will see my old friends and meet the new musicians in the orchestras.  Each of the conductors is busy planning concert programs and special events for their orchestra, and they are looking forward to the first rehearsal as much as I.  The joy of music will fill each Saturday with excitement, musical challenges, and time with friends.  I know you will enjoy the coming concert season, and I look forward to seeing you very soon.
THE FIRST REHEARSAL DAY: PARENTS
The first day of WYSO, Saturday, September 8, is full of activities for everyone! Students should arrive between 8:30 and 8:45am for the 9:00am rehearsals.  Beginning at 8:45am, parents are invited to Strelow Lounge for coffee and conversation with other parents. All parents should plan to attend the required parent meeting at 9:30am (Youth and Philharmonia Orchestras in room 1111; Concert Orchestra and Sinfonietta in room 2650).  The meeting will acquaint new and returning parents with WYSO's activities and expectations for the year ahead (note the new attendance policy) and provide a forum for parents to ask questions of WYSO staff and Parents' Association Chairs.  Conductors will be available after the meeting to meet with parents.  Members and families are invited to the Pizza Party in Strelow Lounge (Youth and Philharmonia Orchestra 12:00-12:30pm; Concert Orchestra and Sinfonietta at 12:30-1:00pm. Parents are encouraged to find the WYSO member roster in their child's music folder after the first rehearsal.
READ THE ANNOUNCEMENTS!
Prompt and thorough communication with families is a priority for WYSO. All members are expected to read and understand the weekly announcements for their orchestra. They are posted each Saturday on the announcement board near the rehearsal office (room 1336) and on each orchestra's rehearsal room door. Beginning on Friday afternoons, parents and members may view the announcements for the upcoming week on the Member's Area of the WYSO website. Important fliers and forms may be available for download and will be available for pick-up from the tables by the announcement board. Parents are encouraged to check their child's music folder regularly for fliers or forms picked up at rehearsal. Many valuable opportunities are available to WYSO members -- don't miss one because you didn't read the announcements!
CONDUCTOR'S HEARINGS

What is a Conductor's Hearing?  Mr. Smith (Youth Orchestra conductor), Mr. Buchhauser (Philharmonia Orchestra conductor), and Mrs. Eckel (Concert Orchestra conductor) hold "conductor's hearings" every fall for string players who would like to be heard individually by their conductor. The hearing is not a mandatory audition, but an opportunity for string players to display leadership skills as well as musicality and technique. Required excerpts always come from the music currently being rehearsed. A list of excerpts will be distributed on the first rehearsal day. Hearings take place after rehearsal on the dates listed below.  Sign-up sheets will be posted on rehearsal room doors, or members may e-mail Casey to be assigned a time.

CHAMBER MUSIC PROGRAM

WYSO's Chamber Music Program, under the direction of Carina Voly, is open to all WYSO musicians.  Applications were mailed in August and are due September 15.  The $175 program fee includes regular coachings with a professional teacher and at least two performances during the season. To learn more about the Chamber Music Program and to download an application, click here. Contact Carina Voly at 230-5580 for more information.

PARKING DURING FOOTBALL GAMES

Badger football home games are scheduled for September 15, 22, 29, October 20, 27, and November 10. The game times vary and are announced a few weeks before the game. Check your newspaper and the UW Badgers Website for game times that will likely affect WYSO pick-ups or drop-offs. Consult the back of your member handbook for parking options. On game days, consider parking closer to the Capitol (and farther from the Stadium). Aside from home games, the worst Saturday for parking and traffic will be April 26, 2008 during the CrazyLegs Run.

SPECIAL PARENT MEETING: TOURS
WYSO Music Director James Smith and the Board of Directors' Tour Committee have begun discussing the next major tour. Parents of all current and potential Youth Orchestra members are encouraged to attend a special parent meeting on Thursday, September 20 at 7:00pm in Morphy Hall, UW Humanities Building, to discuss major touring. Come prepared with any questions and concerns you would like the committee to address.

MUSIC THEORY AND EAR-TRAINING CLASSES

Offered through the UW-Madison Division of Continuing Studies, this course is geared towards high-school students with a general working knowledge of music and substantial experience reading and performing Western compositions. The 10-session class provides an interactive forum for gaining skills and fluency with basic vocabulary and theoretical ideas used routinely in books, classrooms, and rehearsals, among other places. Interactive study materials are provided.
UW Humanities Bldg., Saturdays, Sept 29-Dec 15, 1-2:30 pm, (no class Nov 17, 24)
Cost: $120   Contact: asheehy@wisc.edu

MENTORING OPPORTUNITY FOR WYSO MUSICIANS

In partnership with Music Makers and the UW School of Music, WYSO is seeking high school students to mentor young violin students after school at Centro Hispano and Bay View Community Center. You do NOT need to be a violinist to participate! Mentor orientation sessions will be held during September and January on Saturday afternoons.  No matter what instrument you play, you will learn all you need to know to be a successful mentor in this program. This is a great community service opportunity!  Contact Bonnie Greene, Music Makers Executive Director, at 250-6707 for more information. Sign-up sheets will be available at the first WYSO rehearsal.

MUSIC CLASSES FOR ADULTS

Music Classes for Adults - Fall 2007
UW-Madison Division of Continuing Studies

The UW-Madison offers music skills and enrichment classes designed especially for adult learners. Maybe you've always wanted to study music, but haven't had the opportunity (or time). Perhaps you studied an instrument as a child and want to revive your skills. Or maybe you want to know more about the music you hear. Whatever your music study interests, there is a class for you! Instructors are experienced musicians and teachers who understand the excitement of making and appreciating music and the special challenges of launching into a musical horizon as an adult learner. The classes are non-credit offerings and registration is very easy; participants completing a course receive Continuing Education Units (CEU) at no extra charge.  Visit http://www.dcs.wisc.edu/classes/music.htm to view and register for courses or call 263-6670 to receive a catalog.

PARENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
