WYSO MONTHLY SCHEDULE

Rhythms is WYSO's monthly electronic newsletter, sent on Tuesday before the first rehearsal of each month. Rhythms is an essential communication link containing important news, updates, volunteer opportunities and the monthly schedule. A paper version of this issue is available at rehearsals! You may also view current and archived issues on our website: http://wyso.music.wisc.edu/Rhythms.html.

Please help keep our e-mail list updated! Inform the WYSO office directly of any address changes. wyso@wyso.music.wisc.edu

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

Thank you, Parents/Guardians!  We continue to receive very positive feedback about the level of safety we provide your children.  We take this responsibility seriously and are pleased to let you know that we have recently completed emergency training for all WYSO staff members.  And, as you probably already know, we had an evacuation drill on Saturday, September 22.  It went very well!

We have a comprehensive safety plan, which was created with the assistance of the UW Police Department.  Staff members have all received training on plan details concerning both the physical and emotional care of youth during emergency situations.  The plan addresses specifics for our large student population and specifics about the Humanities Building. The UW Police Department offers students and parents these reminders for emergency operations:

  • Do not use elevators
  • In an evacuation, instruments should be left on chairs
  • Avoid using cell phones until at least 300 feet from the building and only when you have accurate information and instructions
  • There is a phone chain in place
  • Parents must bring photo ID if they are called to pick up their child from an evacuation site
  • Members will only be released to a parent or legal guardian.

It is imperative that the students check in with the attendance taker before every rehearsal, and with the hall monitor if they arrive late or leave early. In the event of an emergency, we need an accurate record of absences so that all students can be accounted for.

We hope there is never a need to activate our emergency plan, but we feel strongly that our plan and training will help us ensure the safety of all children.  If you have any questions about the plan and procedures, please contact Marie Breed at mbreed@wyso.music.wisc.edu

CONCERTO COMPETITION INFORMATION

The Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition will take place on Saturday, October 6 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Morphy Recital Hall. Complete competition information has been given to all students who have signed up. There will be two winners in this competition. One will perform with the Youth Orchestra at the Winterfest concert in March 2008, and the other at the side-by-side concert with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra in May 2008. Students receiving an honorable mention will be invited to perform at the Youth Honors Recital in the spring (date TBD).

The Philharmonia Orchestra Concerto Competition will take place on Saturday, January 12, 2008. The approved repertoire list is now available for pick-up at rehearsal and can be accessed at http://wyso.music.wisc.edu/competition.html. Please contact Casey Herrod if you would like to play something that is not already approved. Applications will be available in early November and are due Saturday, December 1. A $20 application fee is required. The winner of this competition will perform his or her concerto with the Philharmonia Orchestra at the Bolz Spring Concert in May 2008.

OPEN REHEARSALS FOR PROSPECTIVE MUSICIANS

Saturday, October 6, 2006 | 10:00am | Strelow Lounge

An Open Rehearsal is like an open house, where prospective students and their parents can learn more about the WYSO program and have a chance to view WYSO rehearsals in progress.  If you have friends or family interested in seeing WYSO in action, meet at 10:00am in the Strelow Lounge in the Humanities Bldg, 455 N. Park Street. Call 263-3320 x11 to RSVP or for more information. Open rehearsals will continue on the 1st Saturday of each month.  The next date is November 4.
ART OF NOTE: PAINT A VIOLIN

WYSO musicians: Enter WYSO's Art of Note painted violin contest and possibly win the opportunity to paint an unplayable violin for Art of Note 2008. The winning violin will be displayed and raffled alongside violins completed by Art of Note's invited artists. It will be pictured on the official Art of Note poster, featured in newspapers and shown on television.

Look near the WYSO announcement board for the contest application. Drawings are due by Saturday, October 20 and will be juried by two past Art of Note artists. The winner's name will be posted on Saturday, November 3 and we will provide the violin that is to be painted by January 5, 2008. Good Luck!

WYSO ALUMNI FEATURED ON PBS

Former WYSO violinist Krista Stewart '04 and cellist Jimmy Kang '07 were featured performers on the nationally televised PBS Special "From the Top: Live from Carnegie Hall" which aired September 12. They were named finalists in the Bolz Young Artists concerto competition with the Madison Symphony Orchestra this spring; Krista played a movement from the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto and took first prize. Jimmy performed a movement from the Dvorák Cello Concerto and received an honorable mention.

Krista, 17, is studying as a junior at UW-Madison, where she is majoring in medical science, but also studies violin with the Pro Arte String Quartet's first violinist David Perry. Jimmy, 18, is studying as a freshman on a full scholarship at the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles.

They both attribute their success to the talented teachers in the region along with the many opportunities with strong music organizations such as WYSO and the MSO.
