STEENBOCK FALL CONCERTS:
HONORING TEACHERS

The orchestras of WYSO have launched the season with tremendous success and will present what looks to be some of the best fall concerts in recent history. The first of the 2007-2008 concert series, named for Evelyn Steenbock, will be presented over the weekend of November 10 & 11 in honor of school and private music teachers. The musicians have been working hard to refine the nuances in some quite challenging repertoire, and can’t wait to share the music with family, friends, and of course, their teachers.

November 10 – 1:30 p.m.; Harp Ensemble, Sinfonietta and Concert Orchestra
To begin, the Harp Ensemble will set the mood with a performance of two pieces by Ellen Tepper, arranged by the ensemble’s director, Karen Beth Atz. Next, Sinfonietta will take the stage to present works by Bishop and Lopez as well as a challenging movement from Mozart’s Divertimento. Concert Orchestra will close the first concert with works by Holesovsky and Grieg before a spirited concluding presentation of Rites of Tamburo by Robert W. Smith.

November 10 – 4:00 p.m.; Philharmonia Orchestra
Maintaining its high standard of performance achievement, Philharmonia Orchestra will present an eclectic program of stunning compositions. You will enjoy "Mock Morris" by folk composer and arranger Percy Grainger, and especially two memorable movements from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5.

November 11 – 2:00 p.m.; Percussion Ensemble and Youth Orchestra
The sounds of WYSO’s Percussion Ensemble are both impressive and thrilling, especially on Rosauro’s Japanese Overture. The Youth Orchestra will present a program of prestige by opening with Spanish composer Joaquín Turina’s La Procésion del Rocío. Next, they will take you to Russia with “Berceuse and Finale” from Stravinsky’s mainstay The Firebird; and finally, a rousing rendition of the lyric Shostakovich Symphony No. 6, which, according to Dmitri himself, will close the Steenbock 2007 concerts with a “full-blooded music-hall gallop.”

All concerts are in Mills Concert Hall on the UW-Madison campus at 455 N. Park Street.  Seating is general admission, $8 for adults and $5 for youth ages 3-18. The box office opens one hour prior to each concert. Music teachers are encouraged to call (608) 263-3320 x13 to reserve their complimentary tickets by November 8, 2007.

These concerts are supported by the Alliant Energy Foundation and a grant from the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission with additional funds from the America Girl’s Fund for Children, the Evjue Foundation and Overture Foundation, as well as individual contributions.

MAJOR TOUR SURVEY- PARENTS

Your thoughts on major domestic and international travel are important to us. The interests, desires and limitations of WYSO members and their families regarding major travel with WYSO will play a role in determining travel timing and feasability. Please take a few minutes to complete this short survey. The survey will be open only until November 15. Please complete only one per family. Thank you for your participation.
RABIN ARTS AWARD NOMINATIONS

The prestigious Rabin Youth Arts Awards, sponsored by WYSO, will be presented on March 5, 2008 at Arts Day, the annual legislative day for the arts sponsored by Arts Wisconsin and statewide arts, business, education and community partners.

Nominations from throughout Wisconsin are now being accepted. Nomination forms are available by calling the WYSO offices or at http://wyso.music.wisc.edu/RabinAwards.html. All nominations are due December 15, 2007.

We encourage the nomination of individuals, organizations or companies that stand out in your community for helping young people get involved in any artistic endeavor. Awards will be presented for:

Artistic Achievement - in recognition of an individual or organization in areas such as teaching, program development, leadership in youth performance and/or participation, and presentation to youth audiences.

Philanthropic Achievement - in recognition of an individual or organization for monetary or in-kind contributions, including both sustained support and exceptional projects.

Please consider nominating those involved in or supporting visual arts, dance, music, poetry, literature, theatre or any other arts medium.  Your nomination can bring recognition for this outstanding work with youth in the arts, plus call attention to your community. Nominating is easy...recognizing deserving candidates is important.

ART OF NOTE AUCTION - ITEMS NEEDED!

Each year, a Final Event Gala brings the Art of Note project to a ceremonious conclusion. Violin raffle winners are drawn, large silent and live auctions occur, and guests mix and mingle in celebration of WYSO and its great commitment to music education for the youth of Wisconsin.

This year is no different, but we need your help. Could you or anyone you know offer a vacation home use for a week as an auction item? How about Green Bay Packers tickets? Or maybe a one year lease on a great car? We need help in procuring such large ticket items for our auction. The WYSO Board of Directors works long and hard to generate $40,000 for WYSO each year from the Art of Note project. Auction items are a great way to raise funds to support this great organization.

Mark your calendars for this year's Final Event Gala, Thursday, June 5, 2008 from 6-9 pm at the Madison Club. If you have an auction item to donate, please contact Jill Johnson, WYSO Development Director, (608) 263-3320 x13.

MUSICAL NOTES: TASTE OF WYSO

Join WYSO in kicking off the 10th year of the Musical Notes Campaign. You are invited to participate and attend A Taste of WYSO on Saturday, Dec. 8 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm in the Mills Lobby and surrounding classroom area in the Humanities Building.

Enjoy dishes from the many nationalities represented by WYSO musicians and families. Make sure to pick up your Musical Notes packet too! Sign up to bring your favorite dish, paper products, or to help set-up/clean-up. Please email Della Copp (for Sinfonietta and Concert) at fishnfam@verizon.net or Jackie Hickey (for Philharmonia and Youth) at jackie_hickey@mcfarland.k12.wi.us.

BAD WEATHER POLICY

With the way things are changing in the atmosphere these days, who knows when we'll get the first big dump of that white stuff we all adore. If it so happens to occur on a Saturday morning, we are prepared to alert you of a rehearsal cancellation to avoid a potentially dangerous driving situation.

Although WYSO rarely cancels rehearsals due to bad weather, we will notify families by email and state cancellations on the WYSO voicemail system by 7:00 a.m. If rehearsal is not cancelled but you decide the drive is too difficult or unsafe, leave a voicemail message in your orchestra’s mailbox stating your plans. Alternatively, you may send an email message to wyso@wyso.music.wisc.edu prior to your rehearsal starting time, stating your plans. Absences due to bad weather will not jeopardize your WYSO membership.
PARENT VOLUNTEER UPDATE

THANKS to our many volunteers who keep us all organized on Saturdays. Our attendance takers and hall monitors have done a superb job keeping track of our young musicians and giving directions to parents new to the Saturday routine. Applause goes to Peter Anderson, Hope Vilbrandt, Patty Wynn, Carin Goettler, Wendy Vardaman, Carla Hacker, Laurie Reinhardt, Patty James, Kate Latorraca, Patty Robertstad, Mary Jo Froden and Marika Fischer Hoyt.

Also, the Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition would not have run smoothly without the timekeeping of Diana Popowycz, the camera operation of Kathy Esposito and Linda Slotten, and the tape running of Kate Latorraca and Kathy Bradley.

Area teachers are learning more about WYSO this month thanks to the newsletter folding team of Patty Robertstad, Pam West, Linzhu Tian, Carla Hacker and Jeanne Severson.

CAN YOU HELP?
**A few parents are needed for newsletter folding on Nov. 17.
**Are you familiar with orchestral music and would like to help sort parts after the concerts? We'd love your company on Nov. 17. Contact Mark Lundin, Membership Coordinator, at mlundin@wyso.music.wisc.edu or (608) 263-3320 x11.
