EUGENIE MAYER BOLZ SPRING CONCERTS

The musicians of WYSO will celebrate spring with concerts on May 10, 2008 in Mills Concert Hall. The concerts, named in honor of the Eugenie Mayer Bolz family, are the culminating event of the year, showcasing a year’s worth of practice and dedication from WYSO members.

Sinfonietta and Concert Orchestra will perform a 1:30 p.m. concert on Saturday, May 10.  Sinfonietta will perform works by Bizet (Romance from The Pearl Fishers), Rimsky-Korsakov (The Young Prince and Princess from Scheherazade), Clemens (Shaker Dance and Lament), and Carrie Lane Gruselle (Follow the Drinking Gourd). These and other light works will leave no doubt for concert attendees that spring has arrived. Concert Orchestra has also chosen a program of lighter fare, including Ippolitov-Ivanov’s Procession of the Sardar, Holst's Jupiter, Bringer of Jollity from The Planets, Tchaikovsky’s Triumphant March, and Mussorgsky's Great Gate of Kiev. WYSO's Harp Ensemble will also perform at the 1:30 concert, featuring six young harpists from the area.

The WYSO Percussion Ensemble and Philharmonia Orchestra will perform on Saturday, May 10 at 4:00 p.m. The Percussion Ensemble, always an audience favorite, will perform David Gillingham's Concerto for Percussion Ensemble and will pay tribute to their seniors with a traditional performance of Londonderry Air. Philharmonia Orchestra’s program includes some of the most treasured works in the orchestral repertoire, including Frescobaldi’s Toccata, Waltz from Eugene Onegin by Tchaikovsky, and Berlioz's Hungarian March from The Damnation of Faust.  Featured soloist on the program will be the winner of the Philharmonia Orchestra’s annual concerto competition, Tony Oliva. Mr. Oliva will perform Jean-Baptiste Accolay's Concerto in A minor.  Mr. Oliva is a sophomore at Madison Memorial High School and studies privately with Philip Scales.

All concerts are general admission, $8 adults and $5 youth. Tickets are available at the box office the day of the concert. These concerts are sponsored by the Eugenie Mayer Bolz Family Foundation with additional support from Thompson Investment Management.
