LOCAL COMPETITION FINALISTS

Congratulations to WYSO members who have been named finalists in Madison competitions!

On February 3, the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra held its annual concerto competition. Pianist Hong-En Chen was named the winner of this year's competition. She will receive a $1000 scholarship and perform a movement of Rachmaninoff's 2nd Piano Concerto at the July Concert on the Square. Second prize went to flutist Akornefa Akyea, who will receive a $500 scholarship and perform the Ibert Flute Concerto on the April 30 Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra Youth Concerts. WYSO members Leah Latorraca and Ansel Norris received honorable mentions.

The Madison Symphony Orchestra held the first round of its Bolz Young Artist Competition (formerly the High School Concerto Competition) on February 9. Pianist Hong-En Chen, violinist Leah Latorraca and WYSO alumna Naomi Latorraca have been named as finalists, alongside another violinist. They will each compete in an event titled, "The Final Forte" on Wednesday, April 2 at 6:45 p.m. in Overture Hall. The concert is free, open to the public, and will also be broadcast live on WPR.

Congratulations to all who auditioned!

ART OF NOTE 2008

THEY'RE BAAAAAACK!

Those fascinating fiddles of Art of Note will once again be raffled off to raise funds for WYSO programs. Check out the Art of Note violins during the Winterfest Concerts as they'll be on display in the lobby.

And why is this important to you?

Selling raffle tickets for the Art of Note violins gives you another chance to fulfill your $100 fundraising commitment to WYSO if you haven't already.

Also, if you're planning on the China 2009 tour with the Youth Orchestra, you can bank any dollars earned after you sell your first $100 in raffle tickets. In other words, sell three books of tickets at $50 per book or 25 solo tickets for $6 each, you'll have a $50 head start on your tour account!

Plus, for every $50 in Art of Note raffle tickets you sell, you earn a chance to win an iPod Shuffle. Two winners will be drawn during a special student drawing.

Ticket packets will be available from the concert monitors at the Winterfest Concerts and can also be picked up near the message board during rehearsals or at the WYSO office.

Be sure to check out Emily Lutz's violin. She won the student Art of Note painted violin contest, announced in December. A senior from Memorial High School, Emily's design consists of very detailed paintings of birds and can also be viewed on the Art of Note web site.
