PARENT VOLUNTEER UPDATE
WYSO MONTHLY SCHEDULE

Rhythms is WYSO's monthly electronic newsletter, sent on Tuesday before the first rehearsal of each month. Rhythms is an essential communication link containing important news, updates, volunteer opportunities and the monthly schedule. A paper version of this issue is available at rehearsals! You may also view current and archived issues on our website: wyso.music.wisc.edu/rhythms.html.

Please help keep our e-mail list updated! Inform the WYSO office directly of any address changes. wyso@wyso.music.wisc.edu

ART OF NOTE 2008

You saw those gorgeous violins at the Winterfest Concerts in March, and now it is your chance to participate! You can direct family and friends to the various galleries and community outlets where the violins will be displayed until the final event in June. A full listing of galleries and outlets where tickets can be purchased is available on the Art of Note web site.  Raffle tickets can also be purchased from you, the family members and board members of WYSO.

Pick up your Family Packets - Consider this, if each family were to sell just two tickets, we would earn $7,000 for WYSO programs, if each family were to sell $50 worth (6 for $50), we would have $17,500 for WYSO programs.

Family packets are available from the Hall Monitor at rehearsal right next to the announcement board.  If you did not participate in the Musical Notes Campaign, you will now have a second opportunity to fulfill your $100 fundraising commitment to WYSO.  We also hope that families who participated in the Musical Notes Campaign might also be willing to participate in Art of Note. Please pick up a packet at rehearsal, or contact WYSO to arrange to pick up a packet at another time.  Full instructions about how to sell tickets are included in the packet.

You may sell tickets until the end of May, but can always turn your tickets and money in prior to that.  For those of you hoping to travel to China in July 2009, don't forget you can use this as a tour fundraiser. Anything you sell after the first $100 worth of tickets can be applied to your tour account. These earnings are not refundable should you end up not traveling. Please note that you wish to put your earnings toward the China trip when you turn in your packet.  Don't wait... get started now!

ART OF NOTE FAMILY DOOR PRIZE!

Win an iPod shuffle engraved with your name! Each $50 worth of raffle tickets sold (5 single tickets @ $10, or one pack of 6 @ $50) earns you one chance in a drawing for an iPod shuffle!! We will have two drawings, so your chances to win one are high. These door prize drawings will take place at the Art of Note raffle event June 5. Sell tickets, then come see if YOU win one of the iPods!

Auction items needed

The WYSO Art of Note board committee is still looking for some terrific auction items. Can you help?  If you can contribute things such as tickets to athletic events, a vacation house rental, a golf outing, a bicycle, a car, or anything else of significant value that you can secure, we would be most appreciative. Please contact Marie in the WYSO office to make your contribution. All items need to be secured by May 1. This is a major fundraiser for WYSO and goes a long way toward offsetting the costs of tuition.  Thank you - We appreciate your help!

Final Event - Raffle, Auction and Silent AuctionThursday June 5, 6:00 p.m.

Come enjoy an evening at the Madison Club, 5 East Wilson St. Complimentary parking, celebrities, great silent auction items, great live auction items, and just maybe your own Art of Note violin. Check out complete auction listings/items on the Art of Note web site. Items will be added daily.

AUDITION REMINDERS

At this time, all applicants to audition have received an email with a link to their respective audition times. If you did not receive a confirmation, please contact us ASAP.  String players, once you are accepted into an orchestra, your remaining audition(s) will automatically be cancelled.  If you have a conflict with your scheduled time, contact the WYSO office immediately. DO NOT switch times with someone without contacting the WYSO office. Doing so may cause audition results to be incorrect.

Here are some important reminders for the audition day:

  • All auditions include scales & excerpts, your prepared solo and sight reading.
  • Remember to bring the following:
    • Your instrument and accessories
    • Printed excerpts
    • Printed scales (strings only)
    • Two copies of your solo music for the adjudicators. Please scratch out any teacher's name or school name so the adjudicators do not have this information during your audition.
  • Arrive up to 30 minutes before your audition time to warm up.
  • Check in at the main WYSO office, Room 1621 Humanities.
  • Be outside your audition room five minutes before your audition.
  • See the Auditions page for further information.

All the best wishes for a successful audition!

SENIOR AWARDS PROGRAM

WYSO has an annual tradition of honoring all senior members (those graduating from high school). This longstanding tradition is intended to thank you for your years of WYSO membership and to encourage you to stay in touch with WYSO.

This year's program will take place on May 10 following rehearsal.  We have a luncheon planned at the University Club (right next to the Humanities Building) from 12:00-2:00. This will allow those seniors in Philharmonia Orchestra to be treated to lunch and be honored before their afternoon concerts. Perhaps those seniors in Youth Orchestra will want to go hear the Philharmonia Orchestra concert at 4:00!  At the luncheon you will be provided with great food, given your plaques and enjoy a special presentation. So, reserve the date now!

Seniors: help us recognize your achievements! Please submit a short bio including the length of your experience with WYSO, notable moment(s) and your plans following high school to Mark Lundin by April 14 for this info to appear in the Spring Concert Program. (If you absolutely cannot attend the awards program, please notify the WYSO office not later than May 1, 2008 - thank you.)

CHINA 2009 INFORMATIONAL MEETING

WYSO will host an informational meeting about our planned trip to China. The meeting will be held in the Humanities Building the evening of May 20, 2008 at 6:00 pm. If you would like to know more about the trip prior to making your decision regarding travel, please plan on attending the meeting. A representative from the Chinese American Cultural Bridge Center will be there to answer questions. Participation in the tour is open only to those WYSO members who will be members of the Youth Orchestra during the 2008-09 season. An informational guide will be included in the acceptance/membership packets of all 2008-09 Youth Orchestra members.
